Thomas Called Didymus Pt. 3: Dealing With Didymus

In his book, The Audacity to Hope, President Barak Obama said that “the presence of faith does not mean the absence of doubt.” Just because you believe God does not mean you don’t have a moment of worry or fear or doubt.

So we must realize that Thomas is having a moment of doubt and we must be sensitive toward that.  Thomas was still loyal to the believers and to Jesus himself.

We know it was a moment of doubt because at some point Thomas shows back up in the room with the other disciples.  And when the other disciples told him they had seen Jesus Thomas says to them, “Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.” And consequently because of this statement he was called doubting Thomas.

You see, he didn’t doubt when Jesus was going to Bethany to raise Lazarus from the dead. Considering Bethany hated Jesus and they were trying to kill him, when Thomas heard that Jesus was going back into Bethany, Doubting Thomas (as you call him) said, “Let us run out before him so we can die with the Lord.”

That doesn’t sound like a doubting disciple to me.  He was willing to lay his life down for Jesus. How dare you call him doubting?

But Thomas was not there when Jesus came. Oh Lord, don’t let me miss that moment when the glory is falling! Let me be there! Don’t let me hear about it at the water cooler the next day at work, or read about it in a book somewhere. Don’t let me be tripping when the Glory of God falling, don’t let me be having mood swings when you’re trying to bless me! Don’t let me be distracted when You’re getting ready to heal me!  You mean You were going to heal me that night but I was too stubborn to praise you and I missed my opportunity? Don’t let me be missing when the Glory of God is about to fall.  Don’t let me be in outer space somewhere when You show up. If Jesus is going to show up on a Monday I want to be there on Monday, if He’s going to show up on a Thursday I want to be there on Thursday.

There is one very important part of this scripture that I want to make sure we don’t miss. “But Thomas one of the twelve call Didymus was not with them when Jesus came.”

I have to admit I never paid attention to the particular verse when reading this before.  It stuck out to me that, not only did John make sure we were aware that Thomas was not there, but he also called him Didymus? What does Didymus mean? Didymus means twin.

Do you realize we all have a twin?

Some of you married folk know about the twin. You dated the twin. They looked just like the one, walked just like the one, wore their shoes and their clothes. You dated the twin but you married the other one.

We all have a twin.  If you don’t think so, listen to what Paul says in Romans 7: I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. 24O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Who’s going to deliver me from her.

Wait a minute…you see, I know that God can deliver me from the devil.  I know God can deliver me from Satan.  I know that He is greater than evil.  But my problem is not with Satan, it’s not with evil; my problem is with this twin, this person that keeps wearing my clothes, and sleeping in my house, eating my food and driving my car.

My problem is not with demonic warfare and casting out demons, I can cast out demons but what do I do with this twin: This other person that looks like me and walks like me and talks like me? This twin – that’s what the trouble is! That’s what’s stopping the glory from falling in my life. That’s what stopping Jesus from doing his ultimate work.

It’s that part of us that doesn’t want to come to church, that part that’s sick of everybody. Can I be real?  Do you know what it’s like to be helping people and be hurting yourself:  Serving people and tired yourself: Encouraging people and wishing you had someone to encourage you.

Haven’t you ever been conflicted? Part of you wants to go forward and part of you wants to sit down. Part of you wants to go higher and part of you doesn’t want to take the risk. Have you ever been in a fight with your own twin? Yourself! Your alter-ego, the person that lives behind the smile and the scriptures and all of the things that you put on yourself to decorate yourself for people, that’s who Jesus wants, that’s who Jesus is after the twin.
