Can You Hear Him, Now? (part one)

I have friends and acquaintances that have a hard time understanding the depth of my relationship with God.  Well, don’t seem so surprised…I’m certain you have some, too.  Or perhaps, you have your own questions about some of the people in your circle that seem to be so devoted to a God you cannot see or hear.

I have had people deem me to be foolish, because I talk to God in my car, as if He were riding as a passenger. They look at me sideways when I respond as if I had been given some inside information or laugh as if I had just been told a joke.

So many people equate the presence of God with old movie called, “Harvey,” where Jimmy Stewart played Elwood Dowd who had an invisible 6 foot rabbit named Harvey as a companion. (Nobody saw Harvey but Elwood.  Everybody thought he was crazy, but they could not deny that they made the most wonderful difference in the lives they touched.)  Much of the general perception of God is relegated to a kind of mental disorder. The basic implication being that you have got to be CRAZY to be a Christian who talks to God as if He is going to actually respond!

THE TRUTH IS…not only does God talk to you, He LISTENS when you talk  to Him and about him!  Look at Malachi 3:13-18.  When God heard good things being said about Him, He wrote it down in a book to be remembered and He said, “These are my jewels and they must be spared.”

God not only talks to us, but he is a gentleman when He speaks.  Even in the Old Testament, God was not hollering, shaking things and tearing the world apart. He gave up that gig after the flood in Genesis. His presence DOES make the sinful nature of our existence rattle.  Pure love does that.

Just like in1Kings 19:11-12, the shaking, the wind, the fire…the turbulence in your life is not God, it is an indication that God is present.  That lets you know He’s coming closer to you and drawing you closer to Him.

He said in Isaiah 54, “I see the troublemakers gathering together against you, but I didn’t bring them with Me.” The more obstructions there are in life, the greater the shaking as God draws near.  God’s presence in your life gets the enemy up in arms.  When the dust settles and the smoke clears, and there is nothing left to distract you, THEN you can hear Him speak.

But, why wait ‘til the whole world is shaking?  Wouldn’t it be nice to learn to quiet our own souls and pay attention to the still small voice in your daily life, right now? Do you know how He longs for you to hear the many times a day He tries to tell you He loves you? He wants you to notice Him…to see how much He is in Love with you. The gentleman that He is, He is not going to come and speak where His voice and presence are not welcomed.

So, how do we let God know that we actually WANT Him to speak to us?

Celebrate His Presence – Say the things He loves to hear.

Life and death are in the power of the tongue: God is repelled by those who speak in terms of death and destruction; He gravitates to the ones who speak life. Who doesn’t like to hear when others are speaking well of them?

Malachi 3:16-18 (NKJV) – Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another,  And the LORD listened and heard them;  So a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who meditate on His name.
“They shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels.  And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.”
Then you shall again discern between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God
and one who does not serve Him.

Case in point: God listened, from a distance, to Job arguing the finer points of his persecution with his suspicious friends, waiting on someone to speak some sense to Job. Elihu spoke as a man who was intimately familiar with the majesty and power of God.  His awareness of God’s handiwork and just nature was the invitation that God needed to come closer. The last five chapters in the book of Job were a conversation between a Mighty God and His desolate friend.  But, that could not happen until the two men began to speak of God in a way that reverenced Him; in a way that respected all of the might and power and majesty of the God they BOTH knew.  Only then was God able to bring conviction & correction: only then could deliverance and restoration take place.

What’s going on in your world?  Are you complaining and griping about it?  Are you surrounded by nay-sayers and co-conspirators to your own downfall? Then, might I suggest you find some people that speak a different language?  You have to find people that are saying the things you need to be saying.  Talk with people that have God’s attention. Listen to them talk to God and one another, and then follow their example.
